The Starpoint Spartans will celebrate “50 Years of Football” when they host Williamsville East in a Class A North matchup this weekend.

“When you get to a milestone like this, you have to step back and reflect on some of the great teams and players of the past,” said Starpoint head coach Al Cavagnaro, a Lockport resident who has been a part of the coaching staff for 22 seasons.

Former players and their families are invited to attend the free event. A reception tent will open at 1 p.m. and prizes will be given away throughout the game. At halftime, returning players will be introduced to the crowd.

The Spartans played well in last week’s loss to the Falcons.

Middle linebacker Andy Mullen led the team with 10 tackles. Marc Sepanski added eight and Brandon Bratek recorded two-and-a-half sacks on corner blitzes.

Junior quarterback Joe Scibilia started slow against N-W, but didn’t have a lot of protection. He started to heat up and settle in near the end of the game.

• Starpoint’s starting cornerbacks are 5-foot-5 freshman twins Brandon and Denver Kopp. The dynamic duo may have gotten burned on a few deep balls against the Falcons, but did stick their noses in on a few running plays, impressing coaches.

• Starpoint’s offensive line is a work in progress with a lot of young, inexperienced players. It may take a few more games before the unit really starts to gel.

• Starpoint has beaten Williamsville East four straight times. All four games have come in the last two years, as the two teams have played twice in the regular season and then twice in the consolation bowl series. Last week, the Flames lost to Albion in their openers, 27-9.
