Gabrielle Cottrell had 17 points and 11 rebounds as Manhattan clipped Niagara 70-63 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Sunday.

Manhattan (4-4 overall, 1-1 MAAC) used a 14-7 run to break a 56-56 tie and put the Jaspers in front for good.

Niagara (1-7. 0-2) sophomore guard Cathy Rutter sank two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to bring the Purple Eagles within three at 66-63. Manhattan missed two free throws but snared the rebound to give the Jaspers a chance to hold on. After being fouled, Manhattan’s Lupe Godinez sank two free throws with 18 seconds remaining and then two more with seven seconds left to seal the win.

Godinez finished with a dozen points while teammate Joanna Nwafili had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Jaspers.

Manhattan had a 43-24 rebounding advantage in the contest.

Niagara junior forward Shaunna Ambrose scored a game-high 19 points. Rutter finished with a career-best 10 points and Michelle Manfredi added nine points and seven rebounds for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara returns to action Dec. 21 when it travels to Boston College.
