The 11-and-under NF Rapids went 2-2 in the Cataract Classic Tournament, handing the eventual champion NT Americans a loss before falling to them in the semifinals.

The Rapids opened with a 3-2 win over the Americans, scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh. Payton Hutchinson drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to score Johnathan Touma with the winning run. Touma, Adam Perry and Anthony Littere combined to throw a two-hitter on the mound.


In Game 2, the Rapids handled Midtown, 15-1. Litter tossed a one hitter, striking out six, while Perry and Nick Ligammari had three hits each. Littere, Touma, Cole Walton and Ryan Brady also got in on the offensive explosion with two hits apiece.

NF lost to the WNY Prospects, 11-7, to wrap up round-robin play. Hutchinson had two hits and three runs scored while Littere also had two hits.

Finally, in the semifinals, NT got its revenge with an 11-1 win. Touma and Jamie Townsend had two hits apiece for the Rapids.

• In regular action, the Rapids beat the Tomahawks, 12-6. Perry had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Walton also had two hits and an RBI. Hutchinson, Litttere, Ligammari, Townsend and Peter Carlo all had RBIs.

Greater Niagara Seniors

Trevor Kennedy struck out 17 in a no-hitter and scored three times as the Hyde Park Braves beat the Cayuga Yankees, 8-0. Jay Brady had two singles and Nolan Barker scored twice in the win.

NF City Majors

• Johnathan Touma, Anthony Littere and Derek McIntyre combined on a 14-strikeout two-hitter as Whirlpool's JA Brundage Yankees beat Hyde Park's Niagara River Lodge Rays, 8-6. Mason Malaney went 3 for 3 in the win, while Payton Hutchinson and Touma had two hits each.

Nick Ligammari doubled in the loss.

• Hutchinson and Malaney teamed up for a three-hitter, striking out nine in the Yankees' 7-5 win over Hyde Park's Tops Tigers. Hutchinson also had two hits, including a double, and Littere added two hits of his own.

RJ Johnson hit a solo home run for the Tigers.

• Lucas Miller hit a walk-off double to lead Midtown's Village Gate Red Sox over the Rays, 3-2. Kyree Edwards had two hits and Jayson Miller had a knock as well for the Sox.

Ligammari had another hit for the Rays.



Matt Petrosian (Niagara Frontier GC) and Desmond Stoll (Lockport Town & CC) both qualified for the NYS Open by tying for third this weekend at the NYS Open Qualifier at Glen Oak Golf Club.

Petrosian and Stoll were two of four golfers to shoot a 1-under 71.

The NYS Open will be held July 16-18 at Bethpage Black.



Lewiston native Maddy Catalano won the girls 16-18 division at this week's competition at the Fox Valley Country Club, carding a 14-over 86.

Ryan Edholm (Tonawanda) won the boys 13-15 division with a 5-over 77, while Ian Wagner (Medina) took the boys 16-18 division with a 4-over 76,
