It might be a vastly different group than last year’ s Section VI Class A finalists, but Lewiston-Porter junior Matt Cattarin still has the same positive preseason vibes with this year’s team.

“It has the same feel as last year as far as hard work goes,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that are ready to step up and fill in. Sure, we lost a lot, but we’ve got enough to reload.”

Veteran coach Mark Waple agreed.

“It’s going to be tough to replace what left ... but what a lot of these guys learned as underclassmen was extremely valuable,” the coach said. “I think this group is ready to step up and find their own identity.”

The Lancers will be led by Cattarin and fellow junior Dan Sharpe. The right-handed duo will be at the top of the team’s rotation, followed by sophomore transfer Jake Janeczko and a slew of youngsters up from the JV including Anthony Gabriele, Charlie Mantell, Sean Brock and Mike Cudahee.

“It’s not going to all fall on one guy,” Sharpe said. “We have a lot arms that can give an inning or two here and there.”

The lineup will also be deep with Cattarin, Sharpe and Janeczko leading the way. When the trio is not pitching, Cattarin will play first, while Sharpe and Janeczko will man third. Janeczko will also play catcher along with sophomore Tyler Tubinis.

The middle infield is loaded with speed with in senior second baseman Joe Casale and sophomore shortstop Alex Nowocien. The outfield will likely include Cuddahee, Kevin Parker, Josh Sorenson and Aaron Sydor at different points, according to Waple.

Rounding out the roster is Mario Beccari, Joe Caprio, Vince Lombardi and Joe Meyer.

“The leadership of last year’s guys has carried down to us, so I think we’re ready to pick things up and have another really good season,” Sharpe said.

“There’s not that much difference between every team in the league, so there’s no reason why we can’t compete with everybody again this year,” Cattarin added.

• COACH: Mark Waple

• KEY RETURNEES: Joe Casale (Senior, 2B), Matt Cattarin (Junior, P/1B), Dan Sharpe (Junior, P/3B), Josh Sorenson (Senior, OF)

• QUESTION: Will the Lancers’ inexperienced pitching staff be able to hold up?

• PROJECTION: It’s a tough act to follow for this group, but they certainly won’t be as bad as some are expecting.
