Another meet, another dominating performance from Lockport's star distance runner.
After winning the Niagara Frontier League cross country title a week ago, Sydney Nowicki carried that momentum right into Friday's Section VI Class A girls cross country race at Bemus Point, taking first by almost a full minute (19:29).
Fellow Niagara County runner Victoria Achtziger-Hughes (Niagara-Wheatfield) finished seventh in Class A as well, completing the 3.1-mile race in 20:49. Niagara Falls' Julianna Bouton came in 33rd with a time of 22:21.
In Class B, Starpoint's Heather Bugenhagen took fourth (20:30) behind two East Aurora runners and a Williamsville South girl. Teammate Anya Fink took 17th with a time of 21:45. Their finishes helped the Lady Spartans take third. Grand Island's Faith Caldwell (22:20) and Riley Joseph (22:27) finished 23rd and 26th, respectively. The Lady Vikings placed sixth.
Newfane's Kimberly Goerss won Class C at 19:56.04, leading seven Lady Panthers in the top 23. Roy-Hart's Anna Rickard added a seventh-place finish.
Cassidy Wagner was the first Wilson runner to cross the finish line in Class C, finishing with a time of 24:22.
On the boys' side, Lewiston-Porter's Andrew Perreault dominated like he has all season, taking first in Class B with a time of 16:55. He was one of two Lancers to finish in the top-10 as Justin Pavan placed ninth (17:27). Cole Accetta took 21st (18:09) and the Lancers took third overall, finishing behind Pioneer and East Aurora.
Also in Class B for boys, Ethan Sodaro of Starpoint took 19th (18:04). Teammates Nate Adams (18:45), Gavin Lyness (18:54) and Kellen Stenman (18:55) came in 29th, 36th and 37th, respectively to help the Spartans take sixth overall.
In Class C, Newfane's Austin Burkard won at 17:09.26, while teammates Nick Baes (12th), Robert Stevenson (14th), Alan Lingle (19th) and Moran Nathan (20th) also placed int he top 20.
Wilson's Will Schwarzmueller took sixth overall and first in Class C-2, with a time of 17:23.
Roy-Hart's Ozzy Moore came in 13th.
The NYSPHSAA state meet will be next Saturday at Sunken Meadow State Park.
Section VI Meet
Starpoint's Allie Bashor took second in the 100-meter butterfly on Friday in the sectional meet at the University at Buffalo. Her time of 58.54 qualifies her for the state championships. She also qualified last week in the 200 free event.
Grand Island's Brooke Eichel took fourth in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 409.90.
