Success stories aren't always easy to come by in the City of Niagara Falls so it's important to recognize them when the opportunity arises.

One such obvious case involves T. Grana and Son, a Falls business that is celebrating 100 years of service — and counting — in Western New York.

The business dates all the way back to 1919 when 19-year-old Ted Grana and his older brother, John, started delivering fruit and produce with a horse and a buggy under the name Grana Brothers.

Ted and John visited Buffalo each morning to buy the fresh produce they delivered to hundreds of homes and businesses in Niagara Falls and surrounding areas.

Eventually, the brothers moved the operation into a storefront at 1314 Niagara St., before relocating to a store on East Falls Street and later a two-car garage on Fort Avenue.

The company moved to its current location at 2610 Pine Ave. 33 years ago and has been running strong ever since.

Over the years, the company has continued to operate very much as a family affair, with various members of the Grana clan helping to make fruit baskets for delivery year-round.

Today, T. Grana and Son has five trucks and delivers produce near and far, including to a variety of local restaurants such as Michael’s Restaurant, just down the street on Pine Avenue.

Julian Grana, the son of Ted Grana, continues the family tradition daily. At 90, Julian, whose nickname is "Julie," still helps with the Pine Avenue business, with his son, Ted, and his daughter-in-law, Lorrie.

These days, Julie still puts the fruit baskets together, which still comprise about 10 percent of the Grana’s business, and he’s enjoying it more than ever.

“I love people," Julie said. "I talk to people about old times. Everybody who walks in I say, ‘Where were you born?’ and then I start. And I can’t stop.”

Second-generation Michael's restaurant owner, Michael Capizzi, summed up the company's legacy very well when he described T. Grana and Sons as “another example of hard work and legacy sustaining in Niagara Falls.”

Few companies can boast a record of quality service and success dating back 100 years.

As T. Grana and Sons celebrates this special anniversary year, we congratulate them on the company's decades of success and wish the Grana family many more years of being an asset to the Western New York business community and the sort of company residents living in Niagara Falls can brag about.
