Lewiston welcomes new Baby & Me boutique

Benjamin Joe/contributor Laura Falsetti, owner of Baby & Me boutique on Center Street, stands by the new sign for her business. Falsetti also owns You & Me boutique just up the street in Lewiston.

VILLAGE OF LEWISTON — The You & Me boutique on Center Street now has a sister store just a few blocks closer to the water called Baby & Me at 335 Center St. Both boutiques are owned by Laura Falsetti, an expecting mother and aspirant of boutique ownership since she was a child.

Falsetti graduated Buffalo State College with a degree in fashion merchandising and “kept on that path” to eventually open her own business. She said she wishes she had done so earlier, but that the location was never where she wanted it to be. Now in Lewiston, she feels like it’s just right.

“I grew up here, so … ” Falsetti laughed. “Center Street has really grown and I can see growth. I just love Lewiston and I just want to be in Lewiston. It’s a really good walking community, too, which is very important for boutiques and small businesses. You need to have people walking by.”

Baby & Me shares space with Vita Bella Portrait, which is co-owned by Laura’s sister, Jessica Dolly. You & Me has been open for three years and this last year Falsetti became a big part of what is now the Lewiston Business Group. She credits local support for her success in the boutique world.

“This is just what I’ve heard a lot from people. They would prefer to come into a small business and support someone who’s local and someone that they know, rather than go to the mall or to those box stores,” Falsetti said. “And you really do, as a boutique (owner) or small business, you have access to so many different companies you can order from. I attend in January the Atlanta show, every year, and you just find new stuff there. Things you just don’t find at the mall or Target.”

While Falsetti said that a ribbon cutting has not been planned, Baby & Me is open for business and offers a wide range of clothes for children from newborn to age 10, as well as maternity clothes which she said were very popular while they were in stock at You & Me. She also talked about her experience with You & Me’s website, shopyouandme.com. Another is forthcoming for Baby & Me.

“I think it’s nice to have a webpage so people can pre-shop, see what you have before they come out. It just keeps them up to date with what’s new,” Falsetti said. “But, I don’t know, social media is just the ultimate. It really is. I feel that Instagram works better than my website. It just does. People are really visual, they just see it, and that’s all it is. There’s a picture, then there’s a link to buy it and you’re good.”

As for her own impending motherhood, Falsetti is optimistic.

“He’ll be here with me,” Falsetti laughed. “He’s going to be a working baby!”
