The southbound North Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) will close beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Monday for deck work.
During this scheduled work period, contractors will be using specialized equipment to grind the road surface on the bridge that will enhance safety for motorists during inclement weather. During the closure, all southbound traffic on I-190 will be shifted into a single lane configuration on the northbound North Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic over the bridge during this construction period.
The weekend closure will reduce disruptions to the public by limiting the number of nightly closures and lane shifts on the North Grand Island Bridge. Once completed, the southbound North Grand Island Bridge will receive a more uniform deck profile and a higher quality, smoother riding surface for motorists.
Work on the North Grand Island Bridge is officially scheduled to begin Friday at 8 p.m. with alternating lane closures.
All work is weather dependent.
Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to consider alternate routes during the scheduled closure.
