The town will sponsor a Midget “A” baseball league for the first time this year.

The league is open to male high school students, ages 16 to 18.

The town also sponsors a Midget “B” league for 14- and 15-year-old residents.

Sponsorship of the A league was approved by the town board earlier this month after a request by parents last summer. Some B leaguers who are turning 16 this year would like to continue playing for the town, according to board member Debra Kroening.

“We wanted to afford them that opportunity,” she said. “Some boys are already playing elsewhere.”

Sponsorship involves the town paying for 18 uniforms and caps, a cost of up to $720, according to Supervisor Wright Ellis. The town also is applying to use ballfields at Niagara County Community College as the A league’s home field.

Tryouts will be required by Midget A candidates if more than 16 boys sign up. The player fee will depend on the size of other sponsorships obtained by organizers.

The sign-up session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Fricano gym on the Starpoint campus.
