Thieves target martial arts academy

The owner of Western New York Mixed Martial Arts, 215 Walnut St., called police Wednesday morning to report a burglary that apparently happened overnight.

The suspects reportedly broke into the business by smashing a 12-inch by 12-inch window on a door on the building’s north side and then reaching in to unlock the dead bolt.

Once inside, they demolished a safe and took $400 in cash from inside, the police report said. The suspects also took a Dell laptop valued at about $1,000 and a Sony camera valued at about $675.

The damage to the door is estimated at $250, the report said. In all, the estimated loss to the business is $2,525.

Police took pictures of the scene and detectives were called in for fingerprint and evidence collection.


n ASSAULT: Police are investigating a fight at the Niagara Falls Public Library. A 17-year-old girl told officers that she was in the computer room at 2:53 p.m. Wednesday when a group of girls approached her and began arguing with her. One of the girls in the group then punched her in the face.

n ARREST: A Falls woman was arrested for stealing from her employer. Shirel S. Sistrunk, 28, 473 Seventh St., was charged with petit larceny. Sistrunk is accused of taking $921 between Dec. 10 and Friday while working as a cashier at a convenience store in the 400 block of Niagara Street.

n PETIT LARCENY: An Akron Road man came to the sheriff's department Wednesday after he learned a Honda ATV had been recovered on Aug. 15. The man said someone stole his Honda ATV, worth about $500, along with a Suzuki dirt bike, from his property the same date the items were recovered, though he did not report the theft at the time. The dirt bike was later found in a ditch near his home, the report said. Once ownership of the ATV was verified, it was returned to the man.
