Lockport body

Niagara County Coroner Kenneth Lederhouse and team of firefighters and medical personnel get ready to remove a body from a field off of Market Street in Lockport on Thursday.

LOCKPORT — Police are trying to determine the identity of a body found Thursday in a wooded area behind a restaurant on Market Street.

The body was found about 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon by two city workers, according to Detective Lt. Todd Chenez.

Niagara County Coroner Kenneth Lederhouse said the body's “advanced stage of decomposition” was hampering identification attempts.

Lederhouse was able to determined that the victim is a white male, however, a rough age of the body or cause of death was unable to be determined.

A full autopsy will be conducted at the Erie County Medical Examiners Office Friday morning.

Lockport police are currently searching through missing persons reports to find a possible identity.

Chenez said there were no initial signs of foul play, however they are treating the case as a homicide at this time.

Further information will be released once next of kin is notified.
