A 27-year-old man who fled Canada by swimming across the Niagara River near Lewiston on Aug. 3 was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol after being detained by Town of Lewiston police.
Officers were called to Lower River Road in Lewiston about 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 3 by a resident who told them he encountered a man walking through his backyard from the direction of the wet dock by the Niagara River. The man was also carrying a waterproof bag.
The resident said the man asked him where the road was, as well as the location of the Brickyard Pub on Center Street. The resident said he pointed the man in the direction and quickly called police.
Lewiston police arrived and began searching for the man, heading to the Brickyard. Once at the business, officers located the man inside and asked him to step outside. He told them he swam from Ontario because he was not supposed to be in Canada anymore and he was going to be sent back to his native Albania.
Border Patrol as called in and the man was turned over for further action.
