If the Mid-American Conference tournament started today, the Buffalo Bulls would be at the bottom of the bracket.

UB neglected to play much defense on Wednesday in what was supposed to one of the most winnable games of the conference season. Visiting Ball State shot better than 57 percent, scoring 14 layups, in picking up its third MAC win.

The loss snapped UB’s modest two-game win streak against MAC West teams.

The Bulls (8-15, 2-9 MAC) will look for their first win against an MAC East team when Miami (12-11, 6-5) visits Alumni Arena for a 7 p.m. start.

The RedHawks defeated UB 64-57 on Jan. 20 in Oxford, Ohio. Miami is coming off a 78-75 double-overtime loss at Western Michigan on Tuesday. Tim Pollitz is averaging 16.1 points and 7.2 rebounds to lead the RedHawks in both categories.

Prior to Wednesday’s dud, the Bulls had been playing well enough for two players to earn recognition. Andy Robinson was named Mid-American Conference East player of the week after averaging 21 points last week. And Calvin Betts was selected as MacReportOnline’s sixth man of the half-year. He is averaging 8.8 points and a team-best 6.9 rebounds off the bench. In conference play, he’s raised those averages to 11 points and 8.8 rebounds.

• The UB women (12-11, 5-5 MAC) will host Central Michigan (5-18, 1-9) at 5 p.m. The Bulls lost 73-67 at Western Michigan on Wednesday after winning two straight.
