Points proved hard to come by at both ends of the court, as No. 7 Albion defeated No. 10 Lew-Port 36-26 Tuesday in a Section VI Class A-2 pre-quarterfinal game.

Rachel Karas scored 11 points, Casey Button eight and Paige Golden seven to lead the way for Albion, which visits No. 2 East Aurora (16-4 ) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it’s a W,” Albion coach Alec Sherman said. “We hung in there and got the job done in the end.”

Emily Marin scored eight to lead Lew-Port, which struggled through a dismal shooting night both from the field and from the free throw line (11 of 30).

“We couldn’t make a basket,” Lew-Port coach Tina Williams said. “Our shots weren’t falling and our foul shooting hurt us. You can’t win a game like that.”

Lew-Port did grab a brief 3-0 lead at the outset after a jumper off a turnover by Nikki Mokhiber.

However, Albion answered with an 11-2 run to close the period and rally into the lead for good at 11-5.

A 3-point basket by Golden capped off that Purple Eagle uprising, which also included buckets by Karas, Golden, Jamie Marling and Aaricka Reamer.

Keeping the momentum, Albion opened the second period with a 7-0 run to open up an 18-5 advantage. Karas and Golden each had two lay-ups in the period, which finished with Albion up by 10 at 20-10.

Plagued by cold shooting and turnovers, Lew-Port needed a late three by Chelsea O’Laughlin to stay within 10 at the break.

Albion maintained a 25-15 lead at the three-quarter mark, as Lew-Port failed to score from the field in the third period.

Lew-Port did close to within seven, 27-20, early in the final period, but could get no closer. Albion answered with a key 9-2 run, including a jumper and a lay-up by Button and a three-point play by Karas, to move back out to a 14-point lead and put a lock on the victory.

“Defensively, we played pretty well, but offensively we’ve got some work to do before we face East Aurora,” Sherman said.

Albion improves to 14-7 while Lew-Port finishes the season at 2-19.
