18 area high school students will be honored Sunday, May 4 at 6 p.m. at the 43rd Annual Thomas E. Hewitt Sports Awards Dinner, held at Niagara Community College. The dinner will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., and will be sponsored by the Board of Associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center.

Joe Mihalich, the men’s basketball coach at Niagara University, will be the featured speaker.

Determined by a panel of judges, the dinner, named for the late city editor of the Niagara Gazette, will include a presentation of $2,000 scholarships to the top male and female candidates. Judging will be based on scholastic achievement, athletic achievement, school and community involvement, and a personal interview with the judges





FEMALE NOMINEES



Ashley Beamish

Niagara-Wheatfield

The daughter of Vicky and Tom Beamish. Ashley is the salutatorian of the senior class, who has earned a 98.92 weighted average and a 97.90 non-weighted average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, was named an all-WNY scholar athlete, and is listed in “Who’s Who” Among High School Students. She was captain of the varsity soccer team, and was first team all-NFL soccer for three years. She is a member of the varsity track team, and was again first team all-NFL for three years. She plans to attend Seton Hall University where she has earned a partial athletic and academic scholarship to play soccer.



Katie M. Colton

Starpoint

The daughter of Rae and Christopher Colton. Katie has earned a 97.83 weighted average and a 96.95 non-weighted average. She is president of the National Honor Society, member of the Scholastic Bowl team, a recipient of the Superintendent’s Scholar Award, was named as a U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete, and is listed in “Who’s Who” Among High School Students. She was co-captain of the varsity track and field team, co-captain of the varsity basketball team, co-captain of the summer league basketball team, and was named all-ECIC basketball. Katie plans to attend Bryant University where she has been accepted into the honors program, where her goal is to major in marketing and communications.



Kadie Curry

Wilson

The daughter of Rosemary and Roger Curry. Kadie has earned a 989.51 weighted average and a 97.15 non-weighted average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, is a recipient of high honor roll status all four quarters, a recipient of an NYS Scholar Athlete Award in soccer, basketball, and track, an all-WNY scholar athlete in basketball, and will earn an Advanced Regents diploma with honors. She was co-captain of varsity soccer, was MVP on offense and was second team all-league, was co-captain of varsity basketball, and was a member of the varsity track team. Kadie plans to attend St. John Fisher College and study biology.



Jennifer E. Hare

Niagara Catholic

The daughter of Elaine and Michael Hare. Jennifer has earned a 95.19 average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, earned Academic Excellence Awards in biology, physical education, art, Spanish, and religion, earned “First Honors” awards (four years), is the recipient of the University of Rochester Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences. Jennifer was the captain of the varsity soccer team, captain of the varsity basketball team, and member of the varsity softball team. Jennifer plans to attend Niagara University on an athletic scholarship for softball. Her goal is to earn a degree in business or sports management.



Lindsay M. Hojnowski

North Tonawanda

The daughter of Susan and David Hojnowski. Lindsay has earned a 96.8 weighted average and a 94.5 non-weighted average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, is a recipient of a Quality Student Award, is a WNY scholar athlete nominee in soccer, and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. She was captain of the varsity soccer team, captain of the varsity lacrosse team, captain of the indoor lacrosse club, and was first team all-NFL in soccer. She plans to attend either St. John Fisher College or Niagara University and major in math education.



Amber Hultgren

Grand Island

The daughter of Melissa Kilian and Patrick Hultgren. Amber has earned a 3.89 non-weighted average, and is a member of the National Honor Society, is a recipient of State Attorney General’s “Triple C” Award, is a recipient of a Presidential Award, recipient of an academic letter, is president of the senior class, and is a Rotary/PTSA student of the month. She was a member of the varsity softball team and was co-captain of the Vipers Metro softball team. Amber plans to attend the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University with a goal to attain a degree in medicine and pursue a career in neurology.



Bobbi Jo Tenke

Lewiston-Porter

The daughter of Karen and Thomas Tenke. Bobbi Jo has earned a 99.184 weighted average, and a 91.205 non-weighted average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, listed in “Who’s Who” Among High School Students, named to the high honor roll, and was named a Lewiston-Porter scholar athlete. Bobbi Jo was an NFL swimming champion, first team all-league, was a track sectional finalist, first team all-league, and was a New York state swimming finalist and a school record holder in four events. She is a member of the student athletic council, and is vice president of the varsity club. Bobbi Jo plans to attend Furman University and major in elementary education.



Mary Rachel Robbins

Lockport

The daughter of Laura and Kevin Robbins. Mary Rachel has earned a 101.563 weighted average and a 98.957 non-weighted average. She is ranked number one in her class for the second quarter, is vice-president of the National Honor Society, recipient of an Academic “L” Award, and a recipient of a scholar athlete award. Mary Rachel is a member of the varsity cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams, was state qualified in cross country and track, and was cross country all-league. Mary Rachel plans to attend Grove City College and major in English with a communications or christian thought minor.



Katie Syruws

Niagara Falls

The daughter of Karen and Richard Syruws. Katie has earned a 109.190 weighted average and a 95.690 non-weighted average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, ranked top 10 in her class of 451, and is a recipient of the Scholar Athlete of the Month Award. Katie was captain of the varsity volleyball team, and captain of the varsity softball team. Katie plans to attend St. John Fisher College and major in elementary education.



MALE NOMINEES

William Barclay

Starpoint

The son of Nancy and William Barclay. Will has earned a 98.485 weighted average. He is an officer of the National Honor Society, member of the National Science Olympiad, earned a Starpoint Scholar Athlete Award, and earned a Student of the Month Award. Will was captain of the cross country team, a two-time participant in the NYSPHSAA cross country state championships, captain of the varsity track and field team, member of the varsity swimming team, and was named all-WNY cross country and all-ECIC for swimming and sectional qualifier. Will has been accepted to attend several schools including Canisius College, SUNY at Buffalo, John Carroll University, and Case Western Reserve. His goal is to major in biology.



Nathan Bechtold

Lockport

The son of Maureen and Robert Bechtold. Nathan has earned a 98.256 weighted average. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a recipient of the Fredonia Math/Science Award, a nominee for the Wendy’s Heisman Award, a recipient of a Scholar Athlete Award, a recipient of an Academic “L” Award, and a member of the National Language Society. He was captain of the varsity soccer team and a member of the varsity lacrosse team. Nathan plans to attend either the University of Rochester or Brandeis University. His goal is to major in engineering or pre-med.



Sullivan Fitzgerald

Lewiston-Porter

The son of Kelly and Michael Fitzgerald. Sullivan has earned a 103.258 weighted average. He was ranked number five in his senior class, is a member of the National Honor Society, was listed in “Who’s Who” Among High School Students, is a recipient of a Harvard Prize Book Award, and is listed on the National Honor Roll. He was a member of varsity baseball, and the varsity tennis team. Sullivan has applied to several schools, and plans to explore talents in writing and social sciences.



Shawn Hoffman

North Tonawanda

The son of Linda and Bruce Hoffman. Shawn has earned a 98.829 weighted average. He is a member of the National Honor Society, earned a Certificate of Merit (four years), and earned an RIT Achievement Award. Shawn was captain of the varsity swimming and diving team, and captain of the varsity golf team. Shawn plans to attend Duke University and major in biology.



Sam Kilb

Grand Island

The son of Susan and Norman Kilb. Sam has earned a 3.96 non-weighted average. He is president of the National Honor Society, named a Business First all-WNY Academic all-star, is a National Merit Scholar Finalist, was named a Rotary/PTSA Student of the Month, and is an all-WNY boys soccer scholar athlete. Sam was captain of the varsity soccer team, and a member of the varsity rugby team. Sam plans on attending SUNY at Buffalo and major in pre-med.



Matthew Marra

Niagara Catholic

The son of Karen and Charles Marra. Matthew has earned a 90.01 average. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Science Fair Honorable Mention Award. He was captain of the varsity football team, a member of the varsity baseball team, and a member of the varsity basketball team. He plans to attend either Gannon College or SUNY at Buffalo.



Kevin Ogiba

Niagara-Wheatfield

The son of Janet and Joseph Ogiba. Kevin has earned a 94.25 weighted average. He is a member of the National Honor Society, will earn Advanced Regents Diploma with honors, and is a nominee for the Clarkson School of Leadership Award. Kevin was co-captain of the varsity football team, co-captain of the varsity baseball team, and a member of the varsity hockey team. Kevin has applied to several schools, and plans to study pre-med.



Eric Spanbauer

Niagara Falls

The son of Holly and John Spanbauer. Eric has earned a 98.10 weighted average. Eric is a recipient of a Scholar Athlete Award and an Academic Sportsmanship Award. He was captain of the varsity basketball team, a member of the varsity golf team, and a member of the varsity tennis team. He is an officer of the senior class, volunteer with Niagara PAL, member of English reading club for kids, and member of the business club. Eric plans to attend college and major in sports psychology.



Kevin Walch

Wilson

The son of Sandra and Douglas Walch. Kevin has earned a 94.32 weighted average. Kevin is a member of the National Honor Society, a recipient of high honor roll/honor roll status, a recipient of a WNY all-Academic Football Award, a recipient of an NYS Scholar Athlete Award in football, basketball, and lacrosse, an all-WNY Boys Basketball Scholar Athlete Award. He was captain of the varsity football team and was first team all-league, was captain of the varsity basketball team, and was captain of the varsity lacrosse team, and was second team all-league. Kevin plans to attend either the University of Virginia or the University of Richmond.
