Marie D. (nee D’Amico) Proe, 88, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, died at 7:10 AM on Thursday, April 16, 2009 in Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua, NY. Born on May 24, 1920 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rose (Caterina) D’Amico. She married Joseph A. Proe on August 4, 1945, in Niagara Falls, NY.

Mrs. Proe was a lifelong resident of Niagara Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. She attended local schools and earned her Bachelors Degree from Buffalo State Teachers College. Marie began her teaching career as an Art instructor for the Niagara Falls School District. She temporarily left teaching to raise her family, returning when her youngest child began schooling. She taught at Sacred Heart School until her retirement in 1985.  Marie was a lifelong member of the former Sacred Heart Church in Niagara Falls, NY. She was very active in the church, decorating the altar, sewing vestments and altar cloths, and serving on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Mothers Club and the Catholic Daughters of America. Marie was also a member of the Niagara Falls Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. She enjoyed sewing, painting, gardening, a variety of crafts, traveling, and playing the piano.

In addition to her beloved husband, Joseph, of sixty-three years, Mrs. Proe is survived by five children, Rosemary Aubert, Linda Proe, David Proe, Anthony Proe and Joseph T. Proe; four grandchildren: Kathryn Rose Proe, Joseph Colden Proe, Lilliana Rose Proe and Sophie Josephine Proe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by one brother, Francis D’Amico. Marie’s husband Joseph presently resides at the M M Ewing Continuing Care Center, 360 Parrish Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
