Mother, son offered $5,000 for teen's death, court papers claim

BRAZIL, Ind. —  A mother and her adult son have been charged in a bizarre conspiracy-to-commit murder case that was hatched inside a jail, according to court documents.

Dale R. Murphy, 53, who was locked up in the Clay County Jail on a child molestation case, and Barbara L. Murphy, his 74-year-old mother,  supposedly met there and discussed hiring a man to kill the alleged victim of the crime.

Probable cause affidavits filed in both criminal cases state that Dale Murphy asked a fellow inmate, and later a second person, if he knew of anyone who could “take care of” by killing the teen.

It also stated that while Barbara Murphy was at the jail to visit her son, he called the inmate over so Barbara Murphy could see what he looked like. Phone numbers were exchanged so the inmate could call her when he was released from jail, documents revealed.

But the inmate later notified police of the conversation with the Murphys, along with notes allegedly written by Dale Murphy that gave the name and description of the teenage victim, the name of the teen’s mother, their address and other details about them.

Clay County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. James Switzer also reported that he arranged with the inmate informer to listen to phone conversations between Barbara Murphy and the inmate after his May 13 release from the jail.

According to records, Dale Murphy offered $5,000 to commit the killings.

Bail for both Barbara Murphy and Dale Murphy remain set at $1 million each.

A late September court date has been set for both family members. Conviction carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years.
