LEWISTON: Historic caboose pulls into Silo

LEWISTON — The caboose has finally pulled into its new home.

A longtime staple of Ted Mars in Niagara Falls, the historic 1890s-era wooden caboose was transported north Wednesday morning and arrived at its new permanent home next to the Silo Restaurant, 115 N. Water St.

Silo operator Alan Hastings purchased the former Canadian National Railroad caboose car last year for $2,500. He plans on converting it into a full-service ice cream stand to make his restaurant more customer friendly. The stand will feature frozen yogurt with fresh fruit toppings as well as sugar-free, and non-dairy options to help accommodate all customers.

Hastings has said the inside is in surprisingly good condition and just needs to be outfitted with electricity. The caboose, which is handicapped-accessible, is expected to be fully open by May.

In October, the Lewiston Village Board approved a measure 3-2 to bring the train to town. Board members at the time opposed the plan because it was believed that it would obstruct views of the waterfront. As a part of the agreement, Hastings adjusted the plans to make them less intrusive to the waterfront and will be making rent payments to the village totaling $8,000 in 2010, $9,000 in 2011 and $10,000 in 2012.

On Wednesday, Village of Lewiston Mayor William Geiben called the caboose a great asset to the Lewiston community.

“It is a piece of history and allows for residents to go back in time,” he said.
