Fare increase is approved
Riding public transportation in the Buffalo area will get more expensive starting New Year’s Day.
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority’s board of commissioners voted Monday to raise bus and Metro Rail fares by 25 cents to $1.75.
NFTA officials say the fare increase effective Jan. 1 is needed to close a $3 million deficit caused by reduced state funding and decreasing revenues.
The agency’s first fare increase in five years was opposed by some community leaders who say the move will put additional financial hardships on many riders.
Another 25-cent increase is being considered for this summer if NFTA fails to plug its budget gap.
NFTA operates the public bus system, the Metro Rail line and two airports in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls region.
