City of Lockport
Falls Road Co. getting money to fix bridge
Falls Road Railroad Co. will receive $950,000 from New York State to rehabilitate the upside-down railroad bridge over the Erie Canal.
About $20 million statewide is being granted for railroad infrastructure upgrades, according to state Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane. He sought a share for the Lockport Railroad Bridge in light of increased train traffic to and from the ethanol plant in Shelby.
“This funding comes at a key time,” Maziarz said. “Now we can make critical upgrades to this historic bridge so it remains safe for shipping for a long time to come.”
The deck truss bridge, built in 1902, will not be changed in nature as it’s upgraded, according to Maziarz. History prescribes the bridge was built upside-down to impede canal boat traffic and, by extension, benefit railroads.
Money for rehabilitation comes from the Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program administered by the state transportation department.
