THINGS TO DO: Bicentennial wraps up with BPO show

Niagara County’s yearlong 200th birthday celebration concludes Tuesday with “Ending on a High Note,” a free public concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and guest conductor Paul Ferington. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Niagara County Community College Fine Arts Auditorium, Building F, with the concert starting at 7 p.m.
The world-renowned Buffalo Philharmonic will be playing a musical salute to Niagara County and its diversity through a selection of songs that have close ties to the Niagara Frontier. Maestro Ferington researched many different sources to create a concert with all of the selections having a tie to Niagara County’s past. Included in the performance will be the famous 1st Movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, which was composed in 1808, the same year Niagara County was established. Also featured will be selections from Tchaikovsky’s, “Nutcracker,” a ballet which the composer finished while inspired by a visit to Niagara Falls.
Other works similarly influenced by the grandeur of Niagara include selections from “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” The orchestra will play John Philip Sousa’s, “Invincible Eagle March,” composed for Sousa’s 1901 visit to the Pan American Exhibition in Buffalo. During his visit, Sousa arranged a train to carry his band to Lockport so they could see the Flight of Five locks on the Erie Canal.
Another musical highlight will be the performance of Ferde Grofé’s, “Power of Niagara.” Grofé, composer of the famous, “Grand Canyon Suite,” was commissioned to compose this selection for the 1961 opening celebration of the Niagara Power Project. Grofé himself was the guest conductor for the BPO who premiered this selection at Niagara University.
In addition, concertgoers will be entertained by the sights and sounds of a bygone era, presented by the costumed Old Fort Niagara Regimental Field Music fyfe and drums.
Ferington, a resident of Somerset is professor emeritus from NCCC. He has 24 years of experience as the guest conductor for the BPO, conducting more than 300 concerts throughout several states. Besides serving as guest conductor, Ferington also serves on the BPO’s board of trustees.
