Trailing late, Lakemen senior running back Justin Slango was running in for a touchdown, fumbled the ball and senior teammate Nick Bell was there to pick up the ball and run it in as the Lakemen celebrated their big homecoming, playoff-clinching win at Walter J. Hutchison Field.
The Tigers opened the scoring on a short passing TD, but Wilson responded when Slango ran 25 yards for a score. Junior Tim Walch’s two-point conversion run gave the hosts an 8-7 lead after one.
In the second, Walch ran it in from a yard out and senior Chris Reid booted the extra point as Wilson led, 15-7. A late Tigers TD and conversion pass tied the game at halftime, 15-15.
In the third quarter, Akron took the lead on another short TD run and PAT, but Slango rumbled 50 yards for a TD and this time it was Wilson junior Dan Myrto booting the extra point to tie the game again, 22-22.
Wilson took the lead, 25-22, in the fourth quarter on a Myrto 22-yard field goal. The Tigers scored on a 17-yard run and added the PAT, setting the stage for Bell’s fumble recovery. Myrto’s PAT rounded out the scoring.
Defensively, Wilson was led by senior Steve Szuba’s 11 tackles. Senior Brian Kerwin added eight tackles, senior Tayler Thilk had an interception, senior Will Hall had a fumble recovery, hall fumble senior Colin Spatorico also had a fumble recovery and junior Justin Westmoreland chipped in with another fumble recovery
“I was super proud of our effort. C North is on its head. It’s really anybody’s division at this point,” Atlas said. “I couldn’t be happier for them to play the way they did on homecoming.”
