Niagara Gazette — Grand Island High School is hosting a celebration of 50 years at Gene Masters Field at 11:30 a.m. Saturday before the Vikings’ regular season finale at 2 p.m. against Williamsville North.
All former GI football players and coaches are invited to a tent party on the football field. Free hot dogs will be provided. Saturday’s game will be the last played on the grass field at Masters, which is being replaced by turf over the offseason. For more information, contact athletic director Jon Roth at 763-8812.
The 2013 Vikings are 5-1 overall and finished the Class A North portion of their schedule at 4-1. They’ve locked up the No. 2 seed in the division and will have the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in all of Class A, pending West Seneca East’s game against Hutch Tech. GI will start the playoffs on the road against either McKinley or Will. South.
The Spartans are 4-2 overall and 3-2 in Class A Central. They’ve locked up the No. 7 seed in the playoffs, where they’ll play South Park.
Niagara Falls at Clarence,7 p.m. tonight
The Wolverines (1-5, 1-4 AA) clinch the No. 6 seed with a league win over the Red Devils (1-5, 1-4). A loss would leave their playoff lives to tiebreakers.
West Seneca West (0-6, 0-5) and Lockport (2-4, 1-4) meet Saturday, and the Wolverines would miss the playoffs with a loss and a WSW win over more than 10 points due to the point differential tiebreaker.
NF will be without star junior running back Shaolin McCray, who sprained his ankle in a non-league loss to McKinley last week.
Lew-Port at Amherst, 6 p.m. tonight
A loss to Albion last week put the Lancers’ playoff hopes on life support.
L-P (3-3, 2-3 B North) is tied with Medina and Amherst in the league and a game behind Bennett and Albion (both 3-2). The Lancers also lost to Bennett, but have a win over Medina. Medina and Albion play this week, and the Lancers need a blowout win and a tight Medina win over Albion to make up for a poor point differential.
The Tigers are also mathematically still alive, but would need a blowout win and multiple breaks to make the playoffs.
