Niagara Gazette — The Newfane Panthers, led by head coach Chuck Hagel, evened their record at 1-1 with a huge road victory at Walter J. Hutchison Field in Class C grid action on Friday night, defeating Wilson by a score of 28-13.
Newfane junior Kyle Burdick rushed for two touchdowns and gained 110 yards on 24 carries. His touchdowns came on runs of 10 and 13 yards. Panthers junior Kyle Guerriera added a six-yard touchdown run and gained 73 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Josh Kneeland was 3-for-11 n passing for 50 yards, but added a touchdown with a one-yard run.
Guerriera added four PATs to the winning cause.
The Lakemen (0-2) scored on 1-yard dive from senior quarterback Tim Walch, who went 8-of-19 in passing, for a total of 132 yards and one touchdown. Wilson also scored on a 39-yard pass from Walch to junior Jarrett Johnston.
Burdick sealed the victory with a late, fourth quarter interception.
Junior Hunter Howland had 65 yards on 21 carries for head coach Bill Atlas’ Lakemen. Senior receiver Kevin Daunce added three catches for 44 yards.
“We opened the season with two road games. We wanted to win them bothm but we’ll take the split,” Nagel said. “It felt almost like a home game for us tonight. I think we had more fans here than they did with parents, teachers, administrators and boosters at the game. It was great to see so much support.”
Newfane plays its 2013 home opener at 2 p.m. next Saturday against Tonawanda.
