NU volleyball, men's soccer lose

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara University men’s soccer team was blanked in its opening match at the Akron Tournament in Akron, Ohio on Friday evening, losing 2-0 to the San Diego State Aztecs.

The Purple Eagles gave up both goals late in the first half, scored by Casey Meuser and Blake Wise.

Niagara (1-3) will play its final game at the Akron Tournament on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Virginia Commonwealth University.

Niagara’s volleyball team went 0-2 on Friday at the Bulldog Invitational in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Purple Eagles opened the day with a loss in three straight sets to Mississippi State, 13-25, 17-25, 19-25. Niagara appeared on its way to pulling off an early surprise by taking an early 4-1 lead, but the tournament host Bulldogs rallied with a 9-1 run to take the opening set.

Amanda Sedore led Niagara with eight kills, while Logan Rae added six. Allison Reis and Alex Stone had 18 and 11 digs, respectively.

Later in the day Niagara faced Wofford, and again fell in three sets, 13-25, 19-25, 21-25. The Purple Eagles opened the third set with a 4-1 run and built its lead to 15-10 before Wofford mounted a comeback. The Purple Eagles regained its lead at 21-20, but the Terriers responded with five straight points to steal the win and complete the sweep.

Sedore had eight kills in the match, while Rae led the team in digs with 11.

Niagara will face both teams again today, beginning with Wofford at 4:30 p.m. followed by Mississippi State at 7:30 p.m.
