Whitney wins Senior Porter Cup

Niagara Gazette — Cyrus Whitney won the Senior Porter Cup on Friday at Niagara Falls Country Club with a 54-hole score of 3-over par 213.

Whitney, 56, of Oro Valley, Ariz., opened the tournament with a 73 on Wednesday, built a five-shot lead with a 69 on Thursday, and shot 71 in the final round to hold off runner-up Larry Nunez, who also shot 71 on Friday.

After starting Friday's round with a pair of bogeys, Whitney played under par the rest of the round.

"I got off to a little bit of a shaky start but a birdie on the third hole settled me down," Whitney said. "The guys I played with had some problems and I sort of pulled away and was able to enjoy the back nine."

Whitney made his Senior Porter Cup debut last summer, shooting 7-over for the tournament and finishing in seventh place.

"This year, I didn't make any double bogeys," Whitney said. "The guys I played with all played similarly to me but seemed to have one or two blowup holes. I kept the ball in play and that's why I was successful."

Whitney had previously won the New Mexico and Southern Nevada Senior Amateur events and has qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship later this month.

For now, the Senior Porter Cup is the top accomplishment on Whitney's amateur golf resume.

Ted Smith, 67, of Wilkinson, Ind., won the Super Senior division in his sixth time playing in the Senior Porter Cup.

Smith, the runner-up last summer behind tournament organizer Fred Silver, has won seven tournaments this summer and is Golfweek's top-ranked Super Senior Amateur.

"This is one of the better fields because everyone likes coming here," Smith said. "They like the area, they like the golf course, the wives like to come."

In its sixth year since being separated from the traditional Porter Cup in July, the Senior Porter Cup drew a field of 119 players from as far as Hong Kong and Great Britain.
