Bisons stop Syracuse, 5-4

Niagara Gazette — The Syracuse Chiefs scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings to get within a run of tying the game, but the Buffalo Bisons held on to win, 5-4, at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse.

The Bisons (73-70) scored the game’s first runs in the third inning. Mike Nickeas and Mike McCoy both singled to get on base. They were driven home, respectively, by Mauro Gomez and Luis Jiminez.

After the hosts tied the game in the fourth inning, Buffalo scored two more runs to restore their lead in the fifth. Jiminez and Andy LaRoche both hit sacrifice flies that allowed McCoy and Jim Negrych to score. Negrych scored again in the seventh inning when LaRoche reached first safely on a fielding error.

The Chiefs scored a run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth. However, Buffalo escaped with the win when the final batter, Eury Perez, hit a line drive right into the glove of Bisons first baseman Clint Robinson, who then tagged the base to complete an unassisted double play that ended the game.

Ricky Romero (5-8) got the win, giving up two runs on six hits in five innings of work, striking out one and walking one. Jeremy Jeffress picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Bisons will conclude their 2013 season this afternoon in Syracuse, facing the Chiefs beginning at 2 p.m. Thad Weber (7-5) is scheduled to start the Herd’s season finale.
