Area Sports Roundup: High school soccer, youth baseball, senior golf & bocce

Niagara Gazette — Starpoint High School’s boys soccer team was a big winner this weekend in the ECIC-NFL Challenge, defeating Niagara Falls High School, 9-0. 

Nick Dumond had two goals and two assists for the Spartans, while Colton Rutland had two goals and one assist.

• Wilson’s girls soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 2-1, in double overtime over the weekend at the Dan Durick Memorial Tournament. Lauren Austin scored the game-winning goal with just 34 second remaining in the second overtime session. 

Hannah Johnson scored Wilson’s other goal, which tied the game.

• Kalyn Compeau scored twice to lead Tonawanda to a 3-0 win over Kenmore East at the Dan Durick Tournament. Hope Balling scored Tonawanda’s other goal and had an assist on one of Compeau’s tallies.

BASEBALL

Fall ball is underway in the Hyde Park Babe Ruth League, as the Red Devils defeated Blue Crew, 6-4, over the weekend. Tyler Kennedy and Trevor Kennedy combined to allow just one hit for the winning team. Tyler Kennedy also hit a double.  

Ethan Schmahl had two hits for the Red Devils while Louis Tezak had a hit for Blue Crew.

GOLF

• Amy Birmingham won her third consecutive overall Women’s Senior Championship at Niagara Frontier Country Club, shooting scores of 84 and 92 for a tournament-leading 176.

Adele Berti was the Low Net winner in Flight A with scores of 69 and 67 for a total 136. Marge Bullis won Low Net honors in Flight C, also scoring a 136 (67 & 69). Flight B did not have any participants.

• Jerry Casero’s twin scores of 74 gave him a total gross score of 148, claiming him the Senior Men’s Championship at Niagara Frontier Country Club.

Other winners in the men’s tournament included Larry Stuart, whose 157 (scores of 73 & 84) earned him the Low Gross honors for players in the 50-59 years category. Dave Snell was the 50-59 Low Net winner with his score of 146. The Low Gross winner in the 60-69 years category was Rich Profeta, who shot a 76 and 78 for a total 154. Paul Verciglio’s 136 earned him Low Net honors for 60-69 years. The 70 & Over Low Gross winner was John McCracken, who scored a 181 (87 & 94). Tom Andrews was the Low Net winner with a score of 172.
