Niagara Gazette — The Buffalo Bisons put men in scoring position on several occasions but failed to get any of them home, as the hosting Herd fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 7-0, at Coca Cola Field on Sunday afternoon in downtown Buffalo.
Buffalo’s first opportunity to score came in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Mike McCoy walked and, after AJ Jimenez flew out, was advanced to third on Mauro Gomez’s double. The next two batters, Clint Robinson and Brad Glenn, both flew out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Similar opportunities arose in the third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings, but once again Buffalo runners were left stranded, keeping the Bisons off the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, Lehigh Valley took advantage of two three-run innings to build a lead. The IronPigs went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth, then made it 6-0 in their favor in the seventh inning. In the latter inning, Steve Susdorf hit a two-run homer to bring in the final two of their three runs.
The IronPigs added one more run in the ninth to which the Bisons simply couldn’t reply.
Kyle Drabek (1-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 31/3 innings pitched. Raul Valdez (4-4) went five innings and gave up five hits but no runs, while striking out two to earn the win.
With eight days remaining in the International League regular season, the two teams now travel to Lehigh Valley for a two-game series as both teams seek to climb into contention and catch the Rochester Red Wings for the wild card playoff spot.
Tonight’s game begins at 7:05 p.m.
