NU highlights: baseball, softball, tennis

Niagara Gazette — FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara University baseball team rallied from an 8-6 deficit Sunday to defeat Fairfield, 9-8.

Purple Eagles took their series against the Fairfield Stags thanks to a late surge that gave them a 9-8 come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon.

Joel Klock led the comeback in the eighth inning when, with two out and two on base, he singled home the run that cut Fairfield's lead to 8-7. Jordan Schwartz then doubled to center field and drove in two runs to put the Purple Eagles ahead.

Anthony Caringi gave up one hit in the eighth while Geoff Soja allowed just on base runner in the ninth for his sixth save of the year.

Niagara (15-28 overall, 9-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) returns to game action on Wednesday when the Purple Eagles face Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in Olean, beginning at 3 p.m.

NU softball splits with Iona

NEW ROCHELLE – The Niagara University softball team split a doubleheader Sunday, winning the first game, 2-0, before dropping the nightcap in extra innings, 4-3.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Sensano earned her fifth shutout of the season in the Purple Eagles' win, allowing only three hits while striking out 11 batters.

Senior Alexis Wayne drove in what proved to be the game winning run. She finished the game going 2-for-3 including her 24th career double.

The victory was also Niagara's ninth straight.

That streak came to an end in the second game as Iona took advantage of two home runs to tie the game at 3-3, followed by a walkoff home by Iona's Beth Kann in extra innings.

With the split, Niagara’s record moves to 14-26 overall (9-7 MAAC).

The men were ousted by defending champion Fairfield, 4-3, in a lengthy semifinal. The women lost to Marist, 4-2.
