Lakewomen perfect in league play once again

Niagara Gazette — The Wilson girls volleyball team fell into a quick hole but came from behind to defeat Medina in five sets to put the finishing touches on another undefeated season.

The Lakewomen lost the first two sets 23-25 and 22-25 before winning the next three, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15 to finish the season 12-0 in Niagara Orleans League play (13-1 overall) for the second consecutive year. 

"We didn't show up at all for the first two games," coach Jackie Benton said. "I told them, 'If we walk out of here and we don't win, we can never get this back. So you've got to decide right now if you want it.' They wanted it."

Lindsay Bryer led the way with 33 assists, 12 kills and three aces while fellow seniors Jordan Glosser, Kaylee Stewart and Kristin Sampson also contributed nine kills apiece in the win.

Wilson awaits its next opponent as a likely No. 2 seed as sectional playoffs begin next week.

Sweet Home 3, Nia.-Wheatfield 0

Melissa Goeseke had nine digs and Kelsey Yeates chipped in 12 assists as the Falcons (9-6) fell 25-19, 25-11, 25-14 in the non-league matchup.


O'Hara 3, Timon 0

Anthony Candino, Tyler Re, Vincent Szlachtun and Andrew Wolbert led the Hawks (4-7, 2-6 MMA) to their second MMA win on the season on senior night. Candino had 12 assists and three kills, Re had seven kills and two blocks, Szlachtun added three aces and six blocks and Wolbert chipped in five kills an five blocks in the 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 win.

Holly Rudolph tied the game with 4:38 remaining in regulation and scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Lakewomen their first Niagara-Orleans League title since 2009.
