NU women host Marist Friday

Niagara Gazette — While most students will be in a classroom, lunch room or study hall, the Niagara women’s basketball team — along with many invited young guests — will be in the Gallagher Center.

The Purple Eagles will host Marist at 11 a.m. on Friday, the women’s team’s annual Kids Day game.

Niagara (4-11 overall, 2-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) returns home to host a pair of games after getting mixed results in a two-game road swing.

After defeating Siena in Loudonville, NY by a 76-72 score on January 10, the Purple Eagles fell to Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, NJ two days later, 67-55.

They will face a very tough challenge with the Marist Red Foxes, who will come into the Gallagher Center with an overall record of 11-5 and a MAAC record of 5-1. Notably, their road record is 3-3 overall but 2-0 against conference opponents.

Niagara is also 3-3 overall at home and 1-1 against MAAC rivals in the Gallagher Center so far this season.

Meghan McGuinness leads the Purple Eagles in scoring with 201 points, averaging 13.4 per game. Right behind her is Chanel Johnson, who is averaging 12.8 points per game with a total 167 scored.

The Red Foxes have three players who have scored more than 200 points so far this season. Leading scorer Madeline Blais has 237 for the season, averaging 14.8 per game. Leanne Ockenden (214 points) is averaging 13.4 points per game while Emma O’Connor (213 points) averages 13.3 per game.
