HS ROUNDUP: Gilewski tosses one-hitter

Niagara Gazette —

Nia.-Wheatfield did not want to let another brilliant pitching performance from Brendan Gilewski result in another loss, following his complete game 2-1 loss to North Tonawanda last week.

Gilewski threw a complete-game one-hitter, allowing no earned runs as the Falcons (2-2) beat Ken West, 3-2 in Niagara Frontier League play.

"He became (our ace) today," said head coach Jim Hagerty. "He had a nice outing against NT last week, we didn't score enough runs and lost. He's having a good statistical year."

Nick Matos' sacrafice fly in the seventh inning scored Andrew Connelly, who had three hits on the afternoon, for the game winning run. Mike Parisi had the other two RBIs on the afternoon — both coming off a triple.

Ken East 14, North Tonawanda 13

North Tonawanda (1-3 NFL) scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Ken East got its first league win of the season (1-3 NFL). Preston Smith went 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs and Matt Noakes went 3 for 5 for the Jacks.

Starpoint 13, Iroquois 3

Andrew Speaker and Chris Cribbs combined for seven hits and seven runs scored for the Spartans (6-3, 2-2 ECIC). Cribbs was also the winning pitcher, going five innings and recording five strikeouts. Andrew Rankie went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs, and Brett Guay added in four RBIs of his own.

Lockport 14, Lew-Port 4

Junior Noah VanDenBosch tossed a complete-game victory for the Lions (3-1 NFL). VanDenBosch gave up four hits and surrendered three earned runs while fanning four. Lew-Port falls to 2-2 in league play.

JV

• Casey Gruarin and Jeremy Mixon each had three hits for Nia.-Wheatfield (4-0), which beat Ken West, 11-6.

SOFTBALL

Ken East 8, North Tonawanda 4

Jess Hyland went 2 for 4 with a three-run triple to lead the Bulldogs (1-2 NFL). Courtney Creasey earned the victory, striking out six Lumberjack (0-4) hitters in 6 1/3 innings.
