Power rained out

Niagara Gazette — Tuesday morning’s rainfall soaked the Sal Maglie Stadium infield sufficiently to force postponement of the evening’s Niagara Power game against the Geneva Twins.

After playing a scheduled single game in Geneva tonight at 7, the two teams will return to Niagara Falls for a 5 p.m. double-header Thursday. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, at one admission charge.

Team President Cal Kern said he was “deeply disappointed, especially after what happened at Batavia Monday night.” There, with a drizzle still oozing, groundskeepers rolled the tarp off the field with considerable assistance from both sides and the game began at 7:10.

“We’ve got a whole teamful of guys ready to grab shovels and help get the field ready,” Kern said, but contractural rules prohibit non-union personnel from grooming the Maglie surface.

Niagara was not alone. All other New York Collegiate Baseball League games scheduled on grass fields “bit the dust” as the storm swept from west to east.

The washout threatened the momentum of a team coming off two widely-varied victories.

In a game that threatened to rewrite its record book, the Power scored 10 in the seventh to crush Hornell 16-1. The Power pounded 17 hits for 33 total bases, a slugging percentage of .846. While aided immeasurably by a two-out, three-run Dodger error in the seventh, the Bolts hit three home runs (Ben Pickcard, Bobby Twitty, Perry Rigby) and three triples, two by Johnny Blue Craig, another by Cameron Wilkie, the two batting 8-9 in the order.

Luke Heller got the win, striking out nine in five innings. Hornell left 13 on base and was stymied in the eighth when Power third baseman Michael Kerr fully extended himself into the coacher’s box, then fired to first to retire the Dodger leadoff man.

Sunday at Webster, Niagara defeated the Ridgemen 3-2 in a 10-inning game which took barely two hours, Power hurlers Adam Posey and Travis Laitar throwing 89 strikes out of 117 pitches.
