Niagara Gazette — Dave Bush pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Mauro Gomez hit his 16th home run of the season as the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Rail Raiders 4-1 Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.
Three doubles and a Mauro’s blast helped the Herd (34-28) score all its runs in the first inning.
After leadoff hitter Anthony Gose struck out, shortstop Ryan Goins lined a double to right. First baseman Luis Jimenez followed with a double of his own, driving in Goins for his 54th RBI of the season. Gomez then took the third pitch of his at bat over the left field wall, increasing the early lead to 3-0.
Jim Negrych, batting .358 on the year, hit a double, advanced to third on Eugenio Velez’s groundout and scored on Ryan Langerhans’ RBI single.
Bush (7-4) took over from there, retiring 16 straight at one point — including striking out the side in the third inning. He finished with five strikeouts, no walks and lowered his ERA to 4.23.
Joel Carreno took over in the seventh and gave up a hit and a walk in two shutout innings, striking out five. Buddy Carlyle closed the game in the ninth, giving up one unearned run.
Jimenez, Gomez, Negrych and Mike McCoy each had two hits for the Bisons, while Chris Bootcheck (5-2) took the loss for the Red Raiders (27-34).
The teams will take the field at 7:05 tonight for the third of a four-game series.
