Niagara Gazette — Officials at the Erie Canal Fishing Derby reported updates on the fishing contest, which ends Sunday, July 14, including news that three tagged fish have been caught.
The current size leaders as of late Thursday were (with weight in pounds in parantheses): Carp (25.71), Walleye (6.65), Bass (4.19), Catfish (8.88), Northern Pike (5.46), Sheephead (7.57) and Bullhead (1.88).
Entries are still being accepted. Locations where one may register include Niagara Outdoors, 223 Witmer Road in North Tonawanda, Wiggeling Willies Bait Shop, 457 Oliver Street in North Tonawanda, and Gander Mountain on Youngs Road in Tonawanda.
• Goodfella’s Pizzeria Yankees took both games of a doubleheader against the Cardamone Chiropractic Nationals in the Hyde Park Babe Ruth minors division. In one game, Trevor Kennedy tossed a no-hitter and struck out 12 batters as the Yankees won, 18-0. Zach Winker hit a triple and had three RBIs. In the other game, Damon Dougherty had two RBIs and a double, while Tyler Kennedy and Jason Winstanley both homered in the Yankees’ 8-4 win. Ryan Tezek had a hit for the Nationals.
• Also in the Hyde Park minors, Tony Velez and Riley Cardanelli combined to toss a three-hitter and strike out seven batters as the VFW Post 917 Red Sox defeated the Felicetti Concrete A’s, 15-3. Cardanelli, Wilfredo Borges, Pat Kieper and J.J. Brady all had three hits while Velez hit twice. Noah Licht had three RBIs for the Red Sox. For the A’s, Brandon Groce had two hits.
• In other Hyde Park minors action, Moises Velez homered twice and drove in three runs as the Anderson Electric Cardinals defeated the Porky’s Hot Dogs White Sox, 6-3. Zack Kennedy was the winning pitcher, tossing 11 strikeouts.
•In the Cayuga Youth Athletic Association rookie division, the Niagara Falls Firefighters Association Angels defeated the Buzzy’s PIzzeria Yankees, 13-5. Jason Cerrillo had four hits for the Angels while Ryan Barstys and Andrew Beiter had three hits apiece. For the Yankees, Austin Zimmerman, Dominic Dunstan and Joe Ciraolo all hit twice.
Bill Welch celebrated his birthday by rolling a 265 and a 683 set in the Guido’s Upholstery / Joe’s Guys Senior Men’s League at Rapids Bowling Center.Jerry Freeman took top honors with his scores of 248-217-225 for a 690 high triple. Other series of note include Walt Kendzia, whose scores of 223, 208 and 236 gaver him a total of 667. Pete Ozzimo had a 253-661.
Other notable scores were Marco Napolitano 623, Dave Cuddahee 254-619, Bob Winter 258-613, Jack Schmidt 612, Rich Hague 600 and Tony Testa 222-590. The team of Synacor, Matt Bergey and Kevin Kramarz, defeated BMP America (Sam Lebold and Al Lebold), 7-5, 6-4, in the Les Nassoit Tennis League. Other winners last night included Niagara Catholic (Will Whisker and Spencer Ventresca) defeating Niagara University (Pete Butera and Burt Thompson), 6-2, 7-5. Sammy’s (Les Sniezek and Eric Scheffler) won their match by default.
Earlier in the week, Synacor (Bergey and Terryl Knack) and Niagara Catholic (Whisker and Brian Kurtis) won their respective matches by default, as neither opponent could field a pair. Sammy’s (Scheffler and Joel Costanzo) defeated Niagara University (Shawn Daly and Mike Mucci), 6-1, 7-5.
