NU Notebook: Volleyball wins season finale

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara women’s volleyball team, a young squad, hasn’t had many wins as it continues to develop but did end their 2013 season on a winning note, downing Quinnipiac in four sets, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14 on Sunday.

Leading the opening set 6-5, the Purple Eagles then went on a 14-5 run to coast to a set victory.

After the Bobcats evened the match with a second-set win, Niagara broke an 11-11 draw in the third set by going on a 7-1 run. The Bobcats cut the lead to two points at 20-18 but the Purple Eagles then scored the next five points to clinch the third set.

Niagara led the final set from the beginning to clinch the match and finish their record at 4-25 overall and 3-15 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Melissa McGwin and Amanda Sedore each scored 14 kills while Chelsea Watson added 11 for Niagara. McGwin also led Niagara with seven blocks. Logan Rae recorded her fifth double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs. 

Mixed results in the pool Sunday

The Niagara men’s swimming and diving team emerged victorious over Colgate on Sunday afternoon but the women were unable to match that victory.

The Purple Eagles men defeated the Raiders, 180-102, aided by victories in eight individual events and two relay events.

Niagara’s team of Shane Baxter, Carl Roycroft, Shawn Warner and James Crumm won the 200 medley relay with a time of 10:15.08. The Purple Eagles also won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.13. That winning team was made up of Crumm, Eric Ebert, Cameron Braz and Robert Brown.

Individually, Warner led the Purple Eagles with win in the 200 butterfly (2:00.05), 500 freestyle (4:42.83) and 200 IM (1:59.09). Baxter also won three events; the 100 backstroke (51.22), 200 backstroke (1:52.49) and 100 butterfly (52.54).

Brown won the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:45.52 and the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.60. Roycroft finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.98.
