Niagara men's soccer gets first win

Niagara Gazette — Nicky Watson scored the game-winning goal and added three assists as the Niagara University men's soccer team won its first game of the season, defeating UMass Lowell, 4-1, at Niagara Field on Friday afternoon.

Julian Ekeze scored just two minutes into the match, while Callum Willmott and Coletun Long scored the Purple Eagles' other goals. Goalkeeper William Banahene made four saves to preserve the win.

Watson's goal came on a penalty kick in the fifth minute, after Purple Eagle Tim Magnusson was tripped inside the Riverhawks' 18-yard box.

Niagara improved its record to 1-2 on the season. They travel to Ohio for the Akron Tournament next weekend, facing San Diego State on Friday, Sept. 13 followed by VCU the following Sunday.

Women's soccer loses on late goal

The Purple Eagles women's soccer team scored with 22 minutes remaining in the match but Ohio University countered with two goals in the final minutes of play, including one with just seconds remaining, as Niagara lost 2-1 and fell to 0-5 so far this season.

Catherine Meyer broke the scoreless tie midway through the second half to give Niagara the lead. Ohio's Maggie Murnane scored the equalizer, followed by Holly Harris scoring the game-winner.

The Purple Eagles continue their non-conference schedule on Sunday at SUNY Binghamton, beginning at 3 p.m.

Volleyball falls twice at Akron Invite

The Purple Eagles opened at the Akron Invite on Friday, losing both schedule matches.

In the morning, Niagara fell to the Milwaukee Panthers in three sets, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18.

Amanda Sedore led Niagara with 10 kills while Emily Hopkins led in assists with 27. 

The Purple Eagles later faced the host Akron Zips and fell again in three sets, 25-15, 25-19, 28-26.

Sedore led NU in kills for the second straight match with 11 and Allison Reis had a match-high 17 digs. McGwin tied a game-best with three blocks.

Niagara (0-5) wraps up their appearance at the Akron Invite today against Tennessee Tech, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
