Niagara Gazette — Grigorenko, Pysyk out of Prospects tournament

Buffalo Sabres forward Mikhail Grigorenko and defenseman Mark Pysyk will not play in the National Hockey League Prospect Tournament, which begins today in Traverse City, Mich.

In a written statement released Wednesday, the Sabres explained that Grigorenko will not play in the tournament, which begins today, because of the number of NHL games in which he appeared last season.

On Wednesday evening, a team official reported on Twitter that Pysyk was ruled out of the tournament for the same reason.

The NHL Prospect Tournament features rookies and prospects from eight of the league’s teams. The Sabres won the tournament in 2011 and, with last year’s games cancelled as a result of the same labor dispute that later triggered a season-shortening lockout, remain the defending champions.

Among the Sabres prospects expected to play are Zemgus Girgensons, Joel Armia and Rasmus Ristolainen.

The games will be broadcast on WWKB Radio (1520 AM). The Sabres open the tournament this afternoon at 4 p.m. against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
