First place WNY Flash await playoff foe

Niagara Gazette — First place Flash await playoff foe

Coming off a weekend in which they clinched first place for the regular season, the WNY Flash await today’s announcement of matchups for the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs.

The regular season closed on Saturday with the Flash successfully completing a climb to first place, clinching the top spot with a 2-1 win against the Boston Breakers at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester. Sam Kerr and Abby Wambach scored the Flash’s goals.

The team finished with 10 wins, four losses and eight draws, giving them 38 points in the standings. FC Kansas City and Portland Thorns FC also finished with 38 points but the Flash had the advantage based on goal differential, the difference between goals they scored and goals allowed. WNY Flash had a differential of 16, four goals more than Kansas City.

The Flash are three-time league champions in three different leagues that have come and gone dating back to 2010. They are assured of hosting one of the playoff matches when the NWSL announces the schedule today.
