High Schools: Wheatfield wins big in baseball

Niagara Gazette — SANBORN — The last time Nia.-Wheatfield's Brenden Gilewski faced off against North Tonawanda's Tyler Mellot, Mellot picked up a 2-1 victory.

However, in the opening round of the Section IV playoffs on Monday, the situation turned for Gilewski, who tossed six innings while striking out four and receiving all the run support he would need in the sixth-seeded Falcons' 13-3 victory over the No. 11 Lumberjacks in the Class AA pre-quarterfinals on Monday.

"I had other choices. I pitched (Gilewski) to give him a chance to beat North Tonawanda," said N-W head coach Jim Hagerty. "I told these guys to get him enough runs to win the game."

Anthony Tardibuono and Nick Matos led the way for the Falcons at the plate. Tardibuono finished the game 4 for 4 with an RBI, while Matos added knocked in two runs to add to the cause.

The hot hitting Falcons forced Mellot to exit the game early in the 4th inning.

"We're warming up a bit at the plate," Hagerty said. "It's not necessarily the two, three, four spot, we're getting stuff out of the (bottom of the order)."

Mellot allowed seven hits while striking out four.

Nia.-Wheatfield will now head out to third-seeded Lancaster on Wednesday to take on the Redskins. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
