HS ROUNDUP: Wolverines clinch softball title

Niagara Gazette —

The Niagara Falls softball team had no problem hitting the ball on Monday afternoon.

The Wolverines (15-1, 12-1 NFL), scattered 18 hits total in a 16-0 rout of North Tonawanda, clinching first place in the Niagara Frontier League in the process.

In the top of the first inning, the Wolverines put up 11 runs, jumping out to a comfortable lead.

Jeri Ann Orfano led the way offensively, hitting a 3-run home run.

"We were seeing the ball well," said Niagara Falls head coach Martha Amoretti. "We also didn't commit an error."

Marlee Hilliard pitched a complete game only gave up three hits on the mound.

"We have to keep pushing through," Amoretti said. "The last league is game tomorrow and then sectionals. We have to keep getting stronger."

The Wolverines play at 4:45 p.m. today at Kenmore West.

Nia.-Wheatfield 11, Lockport 1

Marissa Hayes stayed hot, tossing a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Falcons (12-5, 10-4 NFL).

"She's been feeling it pretty much all year," N-W coach Jim Proefrock said. "She's averaging more strikeouts than innings pitched, she's doing her thing and hitting her spots. She's been a difficult pitcher to hit all season and she's only a freshman."

Katie Mazierski led the way offensively, going 3 for 5 with a run and a RBI, and Lexie Gibson hit a bases-clearing triple.

The Falcons play a non-league game against Amherst on Wednesday before preparing for the postseason.

"I feel like were heading in right direction and starting to peak heading into sectionals," Proefrock said. "That's a good sign. The bats are working, arms are working and we just have to continue working heading into sectionals."

Niagara Catholic 7, Holy Angels 5

Tylerlynn Langer picked up the win for Niagara Catholic (8-4, 4-3 MMA), striking out four batters. Jess Chandler and Frankie Costanzo picked up two hits a piece.
