Bills add CB Adams to active roster

Niagara Gazette — ORCHARD PARK — The Buffalo Bills have promoted cornerback Johnny Adams from the practice squad to the active roster.

Adams, a rookie free agent out of Michigan State, joined the Bills’ practice squad on September 2. He was released by the Houston Texans in late July and spent training camp with the Indianapolis Colts.

Buffalo made the move after second-year cornerback Ron Brooks had foot surgery Tuesday. He was injured in the Bills’ 23-21 Week 1 loss to New England.

The Bills already were playing without top cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who has a broken wrist.

The team released defensive lineman Jay Ross on Tuesday to make room for Adams.

In the meantime, defensive back Brandon Smith was signed to the practice squad. Smith joins the Bills after being released by the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 1. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 205 pounds, the former Arizona State player first joined the league as an undrafted free agent who signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He was later released and then signed with the Seattle Seahawks, who then released him before the start of that year’s regular season.
