Sabres prospects win opener in Michigan

Niagara Gazette — The Buffalo Sabres began the defense of their 2011 NHL Prospects Tournament title with a 3-2 win Thursday over the Columbus Blue Jackets in Traverse City, Mich.

Nicholas Baptiste, Justin Bailey and Rasmus Ristolainen scored the Sabres' goals. Ristolainen's goal, which proved to be the game winner, came in the second period during a 5-on-3 power play.

Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen made 26 saves for Buffalo, who were outshot 28-22 by the Blue Jackets.

The Sabres prospects face off against the New York Islanders prospects this afternoon at 4 p.m.
