Flynn crosses over down under

Niagara Gazette — Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn is being hailed as the most exciting import in the history of Australia's National Basketball League after being recruited to play for the Melbourne Tigers.

Flynn, a free agent since the Detroit Pistons released him from their training camp roster last month, has been medically cleared and is expected to join the Tigers for Friday's game against the Adelaide 36ers at Hisense Arena. Flynn, 23, replaces Kevin Braswell, 33, a former Georgetown player, as the team's import. reported that Flynn has an out clause in his contract if he gets an NBA offer.

Tigers coach Chris Anstey touted Flynn as "possibly the highest-credentialed player in the prime of his career to ever play in the NBL," in the news release announcing Flynn's signing. "The Melbourne Tigers Basketball Club feel very grateful that he chose our club, and our league, as the best situation to continue to develop his game."

A page on has been dedicated to Flynn, welcoming the former Syracuse star as "the biggest coup in Club history ... ready to show basketball fans across Australia why he was dubbed 'Mr. Basketball.'"

Flynn averaged 13.5 points and was a second-team all-rookie selection after the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him No. 6 overall in the 2009 draft. Since undergoing hip surgery the following summer, he averaged just 5.0 points in 82 games with the Timberwolves, Houston Rockets and Portland Trailblazers before becoming a free agent and signing a non-guaranteed deal with the Pistons. He had five points in 12 minutes in an Oct. 12 preseason game in Toronto, but was scoreless in the rest of his preseason action.

Flynn becomes the second member of his family to sign with a professional team in Australia. His cousin, Eric Flynn, played baseball for the Beenleigh Hawks in the Greater Brisbane League in 2010.
