Power losing skid hits seven

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Power head into the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s All-Star Break on a continued losing streak. That slide reached seven games Sunday evening after the Power dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Hornell Dodgers at Maple City Park in Hornell.

The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, then added three more runs in the third inning. Niagara finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, when Jimmy Landes hit his second home run of the season to cut the lead to 5-1. The Power’s only other run came in the top of the seventh inning when Cameron Wilkie singled to score Ben Pickard. The Dodgers quickly snuffed out any hopes of a comeback as the Power’s next batter, Hunter Lewis, flew out to center for the final out of the seven-inning contest.

Zach Uher (1-3) took the loss while pitching the entire game for Niagara. He allowed five runs, four of them earned, on nine hits. Uher walked only three batters while striking out five.

In the nightcap, the Power squandered an opportunity to take an early lead by leaving three men on base in the top of the first inning. The Dodgers, on the other hand, scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Aaron Haag’s double to center allowed Chris Roeder to score. Two batters later, Dylan Dunn hit a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Sean McCracken to tag up and score.

Niagara got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Ben Pickard scored off Matt Brooks’ single. Again, the Power couldn’t advance the runners they put on base, leaving two stranded in the fifth. In all, the Power left ten men on base.

Hornell loaded up the bases and then scored three runs on starting Power pitcher Joshua Schulman (0-1). The Dodgers were just as tough on Sam Whim, who replaced Schulman in the fifth and then gave up four runs in just one-third of an inning.
