Women's Soccer: Flash draw, Empire Revs win regular season finale

Niagara Gazette — IN BRIEF

Flash draws 0-0in Kansas City

The Western New York Flash endured 90-plus degree weather but could not get a goal on the road Sunday.

Then again, neither could their hosts, FC Kansas City, as both sides played to a 0-0 draw at Verizon Wireless Field in Overland Park, Kansas.

The game did not lack for chances, as WNY Flash threatened early when Abby Wambach’s header hit the post. FC Kansas City’s defense also played a crucial role in blocking other efforts by Wambach and teammate Sam Kerr.

Both goalkeepers were also tested and came up big at moments. Kansas City’s Nicole Barnhart needed to fully extend herself to push a hard shot by Wambach over the crossbar. WNY Flash’s Adrianna Franch, meanwhile, kept the game scoreless by making a clutch save on Jen Buczkowski in the 88th minute.

The Flash (6-3-5) hold fourth place in the National Women’s Soccer League and will travel to the west coast for two games later this week beginning Thursday against Seattle Reign FC, then Sunday against the Portland Thorns.

Empire Revs win season finale, 5-1

The first-year Empire Revs will head into the Women’s Premier Soccer League playoffs on a high note, ending their regular season Sunday afternoon with a decisive 5-1 win over FC Westchester at the University at Buffalo.

Canisius College’s Bri Smith and UB’s Kristin Markiewicz scored two of the Revs’ five goals. The others were tallied by Caitie Pfeiffer, Alexandra Rohloff and Isabella Mitrevski. UB’s Sarah Moore was the winning goalkeeper for the Revs, who finish the regular season at 8-2 and clinch first place in the WPSL’s Mid-Atlantic Division.

The team will host the first round of the playoffs next Saturday against the Boston Aztecs at UB’s North Campus soccer field. The game’s start time will be announced later in the week, pending completion of travel plans.
