AREA ROUNDUP: Jr. Purple Eagles, Thunderwolves win in travel baseball

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Junior Purple Eagles 15U baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season in the Clarence Travel League with an 8-1 win over North Buffalo at Shoshone Park.

Austin Wentz and Chris Sorely combined for 14 strikeouts. At the plate, Nate Waterstam went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Wentz, Sorely, Riley Auger, Vinny Colosi and Bobby Merino had one hit apiece.

• Also remaining unbeaten so far in the Clarence Travel League is the NCCC Junior Thunderwolves 13U, who improved to 3-0 following their 5-3 win over the Buffalo Wings. Pat McCann, Mat Carden and James Filippelli combined to pitch a four-hitter. They also struck out eight batters collectively. Kevin Wojcinski had three hits and three RBI, while Aiden O'Lay and Cam Dabill had two hits apiece.

• The NCCC Junior Thunderwolves 12U team blanked the Akron Tigers, 7-0, with the pitching staff of Cooper Krawczyk, Trevor Conte and Vincent Capolupo combining to strike out 11 while allowing just one hit. Krawczyk, Ian Evans and Cal Shifflet had two hits and two RBI apiece. The Thunderwolves improved their record to 4-1.

• Michael Baio hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning that brought home what proved to be the winning run, as the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles 9U edged the Tonawanda Longhorns, 4-3. The Eagles improved to 3-1.

Baio went 3 for 3 at the plate, including a double. Vinny Carlo, Rocco Randazzo and Christian Ruta combined to pitch a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Ruta struck out three straight batters to end the game and earn his first win of the season. Randazzo also played catcher and threw out two base runners attempting to steal second. 

• The Lewiston Predators 11U team fell to 1-1 on the season after dropping a 9-5 decision to the Titans. Troy Toohey and Lucas Eoute paced the Predators t the plate with two hits each. Toohey also scored two runs while Euote had two RBI. Vincent Mauro had a two-run single while pitching two scoreless innings.
