Niagara Gazette — Angela Gallo of Lewiston-Porter High School and Jake Schoelles of Niagara-Wheatfield High School were named the female and male winners of the top scholarship prizes at the 49th annual Thomas E. Hewitt Sports Awards banquet, held Sunday evening at Niagara County Community College.
Gallo and Schoelles each received a $2,000 scholarship. They were two of 18 student-athletes, each of whom received $100 scholarships for their achievements in both the classroom and in sports.
Gallo, who is the class valedictorian at Lew-Port, captained the Lancers soccer team and also participates in track and field.
Schoelles was captain of the varsity football team, where he was named second team All-Section VI on offense. He is also a member of the varsity track and field team.
The Thomas E. Hewitt Sports Awards, named in memory of the late Niagara Gazette city editor, is sponsored by the Board of Associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital. A crowd estimated at more than 200 people were in attendance last night.
Former Buffalo Sabres player and now team broadcaster Rob Ray was the evening’s guest speaker.
