NU tennis opens MAAC tournament today

Niagara Gazette — Niagara University’s men and women tennis teams will play today in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s postseason tournament, being held at the Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.

The men’s team, which finished the regular season at 12-10, will face Monmouth beginning at 10 a.m. The women, whose 13-7 record included a 6-2 stretch in the final stages of the regular season, will take on Fairfield beginning at 2 p.m.

On the eve of the conference’s postseason tournament, the MAAC announced that Niagara freshman Paulina Vasquez was named Rookie of the Year, while Maria Ortiz was honored as a member of the All-MAAC Second Team.

Velasquez, who led the team with a 21-6 match record this season, is the third consecutive Niagara tennis player to earn MAAC Rookie of the Year honors. Sarah Hellstern won the honor last year and Ashley Ta received the honor in 2012.

Three members of the men’s squad also made the All-MAAC Second Team, one of them twice. David Raymond and Lorenz Schwojer were named for singles, while Schwojer and Mathieu Lacasse were honored for doubles.
